Birth/Adoption/Legal Guardianship/Foster Child

Congratulations on the new addition to your family! Having a baby, adopting a child, acquiring a foster child, or becoming a legal guardian are all considered qualified life events, which means you don’t have to wait until Open Enrollment to add your new dependent to coverage.

Click here to view the Summary Plan Descriptions for each of American Greeting’s Benefit Plans for more details on the impact of your benefits due to a qualified life event.

If you want to make changes to your benefits, log into myAGBenefits or call the AGBenefits Service Center @ (877) 213-6240.

Health Care/Dental/Vision

If you need to change your benefit elections due to a life event change, the change in coverage must be consistent with the family status change. For example, if you adopt a child, you may add the new dependent to your coverage. You have up to 30 days after the qualifying event to make the change, unless you or your dependents are eligible for premium assistance under Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (you may have up to 60 days). (For information on the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) view the CHIP Notice under Notices on the left menu.)

Life & AD&D Insurance

You may want to consider adding optional Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance for you or your dependents if you do not have dependent coverage already.

If you already have optional Dependent Life Insurance or optional family AD&D coverage for you or your dependents, you do not have to add coverage for a new family member.

Health Savings Accounts

Your eligibility to make contributions to an HSA can change mid-year for many reasons. For help determining your prorated HSA contributions after a change, go here: HSA Contributions - mid-year changes. You can make changes to your pretax contributions at anytime during the year by logging into myAGBenefits. Go to: Change my Benefits>Events>Update HSA Contributions.

Flexible Spending Accounts

You may be eligible to open a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or, if you already participate in a FSA, make an increase to your contributions. The American Greetings Healthcare Flexible Spending Account and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account enables you to use pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible medical, dental, vision (“limited purpose” if enrolled in an H.S.A.) and dependent care expenses. You have up to 30 days after the qualifying event to make the change.

Family and Medical Leave/ Short-Term Disability Leave

You may be eligible to take a leave of absence under the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA). The FMLA entitles eligible employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave. You may be eligible for short-term disability (STD) benefits for birth of a child. 1) You should contact your supervisor as soon as the need for a leave is known to receive the required forms to process your leave. And 2) You must also contact MetLife at (833) 622-0135 to initiate a new claim. If an approved leave of absence is granted in accordance with FMLA, you may continue coverage during the leave. In no event will coverage continue for more than the approved length of the leave. If you do not return at the end of the approved leave, your employment may be terminated.
